Gallery Assistant
25hrs - 30hrs
Location: Hybrid working model, Wednesday - Saturday, 2pm-7pm onsite, remaining hours worked remote or onsite as necessary.
Hours: 25-30hrs/week, from Valletta Contemporary, Malta, including every Saturday. Hours will be discussed with the chosen candidate. During opening nights of exhibitions, venue hire and other events, you will also be required to attend evening receptions from 7.00pm until latest 11.00pm and occasionally asked to participate in the installing and de-installing of an exhibition, including occasional meetings outside gallery hours.
Position Overview:
The Norbert Francis Attard Foundation is seeking a dynamic and passionate individual to join our team as a Gallery Assistant to support at Valletta Contemporary. This role combines a love for contemporary art with strong organisational and communication skills. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in enhancing the visitor experience, adding to its interpretive material, managing day-to-day gallery operations, and contributing to Valletta Contemporary’s digital presence.

Key Responsibilities
1. Visitor Engagement & Shop:

Support with Front of House Duties
-
Welcoming and engaging with visitors to the gallery, providing information about exhibitions and artists.

Answering visitor inquiries and offering guidance throughout the gallery space.

Contributing to a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere for all visitors.

Manage Gallery Shop, including keeping detailed records of stock, managing the cash point and supporting sales.
2. Digital Content Management & Communications:

Assisting with the creation and maintenance of the gallery’s website, ensuring content is up-to-date and visually appealing.

Support with updating social media platforms, developing engaging content, and building a strong online community.

Updating the mailing list, creation of newsletters and e-invites.

Strengthening the relationship with media houses, drafting and sending PRs and creating original content for traditional media.

Assist the Gallery Manager with the creation and maintenance of digital interpretation guide to the Gallery.
3. Assisting During Educational Events:

Support gallery manager with fundraising opportunities

Supporting with the ideation of educational events in-line with the NFA Foundation's artistic direction during dedicated meetings

Assisting during event set-up, supporting facilitators, artists, curators and other creative professionals during exhibitions openings, workshops and other activities
4. Gallery Operations:

Supporting the day-to-day running of the gallery, including (when possible) exhibition installations, de-installations, and general upkeep.

Handling administrative tasks as required, such as visitor data management, photocopying, filing, etc...
5. Internal Communication and Collaboration:

Collaborating with the gallery team to ensure smooth operations and achieve common goals.

Keeping regular communication with the NFA Foundation’s volunteers through a dedicated WhatsApp chat.

Minuting meetings, preparing agendas and sending memos to staff and volunteers.

Maintaining effective communication with visitors, artists, and external stakeholders.

Providing feedback on visitor experiences and identifying opportunities for improvement.

Qualifications & Essential Requirements

At least a Bachelor's degree (Example: Museum Studies, Cultural Management, Art History, Digital Arts, Arts Management, Communications etc…) or related job experience in related areas would be considered an asset

Minimum of 2-3 years of work experience in the field of culture, with a preference for the contemporary arts.

Prior work experience in international galleries or spaces will be given preference.

Passion for contemporary art and a strong interest in the arts and culture sector.

Driven, ambitious, helpful and motivated personality encouraged

Excellent communication skills, good team worker

Excellent in organisational ability and prioritisation of task handling

Open-minded, detail-oriented, self-motivated, highly educated and punctual is most essential.

Strong and clear written & oral communication in English and preferably Maltese. Other spoken languages will be a plus.

Proficiency in digital tools and platforms, including website content management systems and social media.

Friendly, confident and engaging personality with a client relation focus.

Good word processing and desktop computer skills, email and internet.

Knowledge of Software: Digital Photography, Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, Wix and more would be a plus.
